The Alternative Media Conference

Bowling Green, Ohio
June 2003
Description: A conference focused on the development of alternative media including zines, microcinemas, small scale printing, and online publishing
Our Role: The James Gang sent a number of representatives to share and learn a lot about public spaces, zine publishing and microcinemas.

The Memphis Manifesto

Memphis, Tenneese
April 2003
Description: The first national gathering of the Creative Class by the Creative 100 and their Memphis hosts, representing media, arts, planning, economic development, politics, technology, nonprofits, business, government, and foundations from 47 cities. The Memphis Manifesto is the definitive blueprint for communities competing for creatives and seeking to retain their own.  Its principles are guiding communities looking to be magnets for talent in the Knowledge Economy.
Our Role: Personally invited by Richard Florida author of The Rise of The Creative Class

The Creative Economy Unconference

Des Moines, Iowa March 2003
Description: The Unconference, presented by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, is designed for Iowans who want to generate new ideas and methods that will boost economic development and build cultural attractions in their communities. The keynote speaker was Professor Richard Florida, who presented his most recent book, The Rise of the Creative Class.
Our Role: The James Gang sent a number of representatives and sparked quite an interested due to our mission and its compatibility of its mission with the Creative Class Theory

The Johnson County Culutral Alliance

 
Description: The James Gang is a member of the Johnson County Culutral Alliance.
Our Role: Members work to be more cooperative to promote new funding, favorable public sector policies, and heightened awareness of cultural activities and their impact to Johnson County.

The Corridor Creative Class Roundtable Discussions

 
Description: The group is an association of community leaders from the corridor (Cedar Rapids to Iowa City and outlying communities) focusing on developing the area's creative economy.
Our Role: The James Gang has been an active member of this group since its inception following the Creative Un-Conference in Des Moines

 


 

The Iowa City Youth Leadership Program

May 2003
Description: The IC Youth Leadership Program works to develop skills and knowledge to further youth leadership in the Iowa City Area.
Our Role: The James Gang was a featured presenter at IC Youth Leaderhip Leaderhip Conference.

 


 

The State of Iowa Cultural District Review Committee
Dec 2004
Description: A Cultural District is a well-recognized, labeled, mixed-use, compact area of a city in which a high concentration of cultural facilities serves as the anchor and is not larger than one (1) square mile in area. Cultural Districts can be found in small rural communities or in large urban areas with the potential for more than one cultural and entertainment district. The department of cultural affairs developed a process to nominate and designate Cultural Districts in the State of Iowa.
Our Role: James Gang member Shannon Thomas was chosen to represent The James Gang as a member of the Culutural District Selection Committee, and served as the committees youngest member.

State of Iowa Cultural Caucus

Oct and Nov 2004
Description: A caucus designed to discuss and further culture and arts in the 2010 Strategic Plan for the state of Iowa. The event is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the Iowa Arts Council.
Our Role: James Gang Board member Denise Dooley was elected as a delegate to The State of Iowa's Cultural Caucus and Board Member Amanda Styron an alternate delegate to the same conference. The James Gang will be featured as a cultural success story at the two-day event celebrating and planning for the future of culture in the State of Iowa.
